Hello Katherine's parents!
Did you know Lily came to us because of Katherine? Here is the story:
When I was living in Victoria a few years ago, I saw a young street woman sitting on a downtown sidewalk with a dog and three kittens. She was begging for money. I bent down to pat her animals and the woman asked if I could take the b/w kitten. The woman, Julie, confided she'd bought the cat (that she named Lily) from a heroin addict street person, who was using Lily as a prop for begging. But he wasn't buying Lily food with the money he was getting. To make matters worse, there was another street person addict who was pressuring Julie to give him Lily. She'd put him off for four days and was running out of time and excuses. She was desperate to find Lily a home.
I went home and called Katherine. She advised I should go back and get the kitten and she'd help me find it a home. I went back and said to the woman sitting on the sidewalk with the cats, "OK, I'll take the cat." She snarled, "You can't have that cat, my old man wants her." Oh no! It wasn't the same woman I'd spoken with earlier, it was the addict's girlfriend. Hoping I hadn't blown it, I tracked Julie down and she told me to meet her later that evening, on a different street, so her addict friends wouldn't know about our deal. We met and I gave her money in exchange for the kitten. It felt like an illegal drug deal.
Of course, Jim and I fell in love with Lily and we will be eternally grateful to Julie, the street person, for wanting to give Lily a better life than she was destined for on the streets.
